Amsterdam in April: Tulips, King’s Day, and Higher Demand

For an Amsterdam stay in April 2027, reserve early once your dates are firm—and be especially decisive if your trip includes King’s Night on April 26 or King’s Day on April 27. Tulip season supports demand throughout the month, while the national celebration creates a much sharper squeeze on rooms, transport and quiet.

The right location depends on what you want from April. Stay near Amsterdam Centraal for a short, logistics-heavy visit; choose De Pijp or the Museum Quarter for restaurants and cultural days; consider Amsterdam Oost for more space and a less relentlessly central setting. If sleep matters more than nightlife, do not book a street-facing room near the King’s Day action simply because the map looks convenient.

TLDR

  • April 26 and 27 are the dates to treat most cautiously. In 2027, King’s Night falls on Monday and King’s Day on Tuesday.
  • Tulip interest extends across the month. Amsterdam’s Tulp Festival is scheduled for April 1–30, while Keukenhof is due to open daily from March 18 through May 9.
  • Central hotels simplify short visits but can mean smaller rooms, more street activity and higher pressure on availability.
  • Compare the final payable price, not just the headline room rate. Amsterdam lists tourist tax at 12.5% of the overnight price excluding VAT.
  • Pack layers and a rainproof outer shell. April is relatively dry by Dutch standards, but rain remains possible throughout the year.

How April 2027 divides into three booking periods

Dates What shapes demand Booking approach
April 1–25 Tulip displays, Keukenhof visits and general spring travel Book early for preferred neighborhoods, family rooms and refundable rates.
April 26–27 King’s Night and King’s Day Treat these as the hardest dates. Prioritize location, cancellation terms and room orientation over small price differences.
April 28–30 Post-celebration city breaks and continuing tulip season Availability may improve, but do not assume an immediate return to quieter or cheaper conditions.

Amsterdam’s citywide Tulp Festival is scheduled to place displays at more than 100 public-space locations from April 1 through April 30, 2027. Keukenhof is scheduled to open daily from March 18 to May 9, from 08:00 until 19:00, with entry closing at 18:15. Those dates make the entire month relevant to flower-focused travel rather than only one peak weekend.

King’s Night is confirmed for Monday, April 26, and King’s Day for Tuesday, April 27. The supplied city information does not yet establish the detailed street closures, transit diversions, ferry arrangements or event-zone controls for 2027, so use the City of Amsterdam’s King’s Day updates when making date-specific plans.

Choose a neighborhood around the trip, not the postcard

Centraal Station area: best for a short stay

The area around Amsterdam Centraal works well for a two- or three-night visit, a late arrival or an itinerary involving frequent rail travel. It also puts you close to some of the busiest streets, so ask about room orientation and glazing if you are staying over King’s Night.

Kimpton De Witt illustrates the room-size tradeoff in this part of town. The hotel is on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal near Centraal and lists 274 rooms, but its City Single measures only 12 square metres. It also lists connecting and selected multi-bed configurations, with cribs and rollaway beds subject to request and availability. Confirm the exact room rather than assuming every central hotel category can handle a couple with luggage or a family.

De Pijp: strong for restaurants and Metro 52

De Pijp suits visitors who want evenings around restaurants and cafés without sleeping in the oldest, most tourist-heavy core. Sir Albert, on Albert Cuypstraat, says De Pijp station on Metro 52 is about a five-minute walk away. Its listed rooms range from a 25-square-metre Sir Deluxe to a 50-square-metre Sir Residence that sleeps up to four. Cots depend on room type and availability, and the hotel states that it has no extra-bed capacity. That distinction matters: a larger-looking room is not automatically flexible for an additional guest.

Amsterdam Oost: more breathing room, with nightlife tradeoffs

Oost can offer a more residential base with straightforward links toward the centre. Volkshotel on Wibautstraat has 196 rooms, including a studio with a kitchen, living area, double bed, sofa bed for a third guest and private balcony. The hotel also advertises a lively weekend programme. That makes it potentially useful for longer stays or friends sharing, but less obvious for travelers seeking an early, silent night.

If quiet is the priority, compare these choices with our guide to Amsterdam neighborhoods for a quieter stay. In April, room position can matter almost as much as neighborhood: ask whether the room faces a courtyard, tram street, terrace or event area.

King’s Day changes the location calculation

A central room is valuable when you intend to join the celebration because it reduces dependence on cross-city travel. It is a poor bargain when your plan is to sleep through it. Families, light sleepers and travelers catching an early flight should consider a calmer base and avoid assuming that normal door-to-door routes will operate unchanged.

Do not plan around a specific 2027 tram, metro or ferry arrangement until the operators publish date-specific details. GVB provides current stops, timetables, disruptions and network maps; its resources identify both De Pijp and Vijzelgracht as Metro 52 stations. Use the GVB stop and timetable planner shortly before travel rather than relying on an old route screenshot.

Budget for tax and the room you actually need

Amsterdam currently lists tourist tax at 12.5% of the overnight price excluding VAT. It applies across hotels, hostels, guesthouses, apartments, B&Bs, short-stay rentals and campsites. The city’s tourist-tax guidance provides the official scope. Check whether a booking quote includes the tax before comparing it with another rate.

April is also a month when room configuration can cost more than expected. Triple rooms, connecting rooms, studios and rooms with usable floor space form a smaller pool than standard doubles. A supposedly cheaper room is not better value if it requires an additional room or leaves no practical space for luggage. Our pre-booking hotel checklist covers the building and room details worth confirming before payment.

Plan for spring weather, not guaranteed sunshine

KNMI’s 1991–2020 climate data for De Bilt records an April mean temperature of 9.9°C and 41.6 millimetres of precipitation. De Bilt is a climate reference rather than an Amsterdam-specific forecast, but the figures capture the useful lesson: April can feel mild in the sun and chilly beside open water or after dark. KNMI describes April as relatively dry while emphasizing that rain occurs throughout the year. KNMI’s April climate data is useful context, not a substitute for the short-range forecast.

  • Bring a waterproof outer layer rather than relying only on an umbrella.
  • Pack shoes that remain comfortable on wet paving and long museum days.
  • Choose layers you can remove when cafés, museums and trams feel warmer than the street.
  • Check whether the hotel offers secure luggage storage if arrival and departure times leave you between weather systems.

Getting from Schiphol and paying for local transport

Schiphol railway station is directly below the airport, while the bus station is immediately outside Schiphol Plaza. Schiphol says trains are generally faster for city-centre journeys and warns that renovation of the airport bus station can produce temporary stop changes. Check Schiphol’s public-transport guidance against your arrival date.

OVpay allows contactless travel with a bank card, phone or smartwatch on most Dutch public transport. Each traveler needs a separate payment device and must check in and out. A GVB day ticket covers GVB trams, buses, night buses and metros, but not NS trains or services run by other operators. If you plan to use contactless payment, review the practical rules in our Amsterdam OVpay guide before arrival.

Travelers considering Sloterdijk should also note that roadworks on Basisweg near the S102 are scheduled to continue into early July 2027. The works affect some vehicle movements and cycling and pedestrian crossings, so check the current route if your hotel or airport transfer uses that corridor.

The practical booking decision

For April 2027, first secure the room type and neighborhood that fit your trip, then refine the rate. Choose refundable terms if your plans are still moving, confirm whether tourist tax is included, and contact the hotel directly about beds, cots, lifts, room orientation and late arrival when those details matter.

Most importantly, decide whether King’s Day is the purpose of your stay or an obstacle to work around. That single answer should guide your dates, neighborhood and tolerance for noise more than a small difference in nightly price. April rewards advance planning, but it does not require staying in the busiest possible postcode to enjoy Amsterdam in bloom.
